Are you a 0 or a 1?

When Mr Robot first uttered these words from an episode in the show, I didn’t think much of it. In binary language used by computers to interpret commands, a 0 equates to ‘no’ and 1 to ‘yes’. Mr Robot personifies this notion, cleverly demarcating the difference between an activist hacker and a worker drone per se, between a doer and a follower. The scene made me think about my life and whether I’ve been a 0 for most of it? I think most of us would have to answer that we have been, in our own way. But this was not out of choice. Most of us are forced into a subservient ‘drone worker’ role by our debts and commitments in life. After 15 odd years of being a 0; taking orders and working for others, I caught a break to become a 1 with this blog. The question I asked myself, “How can I make a difference?”

This blog is the best way I knew how to make a difference. During my uni years I had dreams of being part of a writers circle with regular meetings on campus or local cafes or wherever with fellow writers to exchange ideas and speak out for the downtrodden. Of course this never happened and I fell into line like many others who graduated. After a long haul working the 9 to 5 grind it was clear to me that there was no end to it. I was sick of making other people rich.

Now after all these years I can testify that I am a 1. In my own way I am striving to make a difference. What does it mean to be a 1? It is what you are! It's what you are passionate about but always put off for another day. It was always within you to do something more than the ordinary, only you don't know where to start. For me, it's writing. For you it could be a business, being an innovator, launching a charity or simply starting a neighbourhood blog like Humans of New York. There is something that all these have in common. They all influence or impact other people, beyond your family and friends. How do you reach more people without a real budget? Did you know you can run a targeted ad campaign on Facebook for just $5? If there is part of you that seeks more than just living out your days for yourself and those around you? Know that it's not out of your reach.

All of that said, I'm no where near where I want to be with my blog. I started writing about six months ago yet it has been a slow, sometimes frustrating uphill climb to achieving that reach I want. That said, I've yet to explore Facebook and other social media paid adverts myself. If you are reading this and something inside you lights up, grab your device of choice or a pen and paper and start answering some important questions about your idea. What is it you always wanted to do and who do you want to reach?

I'm happy to correspond with anyone seriously wanting to explore their potential and answer any questions about my journey so far. You can email me at newsontheground@gmail.com.
